25 students from Roxboro Christian Academy's science club participated in NC Big Sweep Saturday at Mayo Park. The Big Sweep, sponsored by the Ocean Conservacy, is the North Carolina component of the International Coastal Clean Up. It is a program designed to clean up North Carolina's waterways. After camping Friday night at Mayo Park, the students spent several hours Saturday morning cleaning up the trash along the banks of Mayo Lake. The students were responsible for logging each piece of trash that was picked up. That data will be combined with all other Big Sweep logs to create a database of trash collected in North Carolina during this years Big Sweep. According to the RCA students, the most unusual piece of litter was a gas tank from an old car they found in the woods. The most abundant type of litter was cigarette butts. The club logged and collected 439 butts from the park.

Nine students are enrolled in RCA’s state approved K-4 program.  Teachers Cindy Melton and Deborah West are excited to be in the newly remodeled self-contained classroom.  Some of the activities students have done already this year involve learning five senses, colors, and numbers.  Academics include the start of cursive writing and learning two-letter phonics.

Currently the students are doing a unit on Children of the World.   For instance, they learned the climate, people, and animals of Africa and made African masks. They are spending one day on each culture.  Israel, Japan, Mexico, and the Eskimos are the other cultures they will explore.  The children also enjoy playing on the new fenced, private playground.
